The camera industry is changing, the photography industry is changing, and professional photographers are struggling. Tony wonders if it's time to say goodbye to a bygone era and laments a time when photography was booming and the industry was growing. Are the best years behind us? Chelsea argues that photography is more exciting than ever. Everyone has a camera, more people get to share their point of view and write history, and more people than ever can share and enjoy photos. Meanwhile, the camera industry has the coolest tech ever! Animal EYE AUTO FOCUS??? Amazing. We have cameras with 30 frames per second and cameras in our pockets that can do computational photography. Are times a bit tough for pros? For some. But others are utilizing the ubiquity of photos and videos online by expanding their skill into video work, drone work, social media marketing, education, and more.

The answer is complex, with 4 major turning points: 1) In the 1940s, WWII's divided occupation of Germany set it back, while the United States' occupation of Japan seems to have helped the Japanese camera companies 2) In the 1950s, the Korean war brought many photojournalists to the US-occupied Japan, and David Douglas Duncan, in particular, had great success with Japanese lenses on their Leica cameras. In the US, Joe Erinreich promoted Nikon heavily. 3) In the 1990s and 2000s, US digital camera companies (such as Kodak and Polaroid) failed to transition to the digital era. 4) In the 2010s, the transition from conventional cameras to smartphones saw non-Japanese camera companies (such as Samsung) exit the market. Japanese camera companies didn't have the freedom to easily exit the industry because of the legal challenges around layoffs. Canon's building a new camera (a Canon 5D Mk V?) that attaches both DSLR and mirrorless lenses with NO adapter - the best of both worlds. I think I figured out their design.

The JPEG file format is 30 years old now. A new tech, HEIF (stored in HEIC files and used in HAVC or h.265 video) offers more than 50% better compression AND better image quality, thanks to 10-bit color. Apple adopted HEIF, HEIC, and HEVC in 2017 for the iPhone... and NO OTHER CAMERA COMPANY HAS FOLLOWED. Just by switching file formats, your storage costs could be cut in half. You could buy memory cards that were half the size and half the speed. Your buffer would last longer and clear faster. In this podcast, I'll talk about the JPEG file format and how WE can convince camera companies to adopt this incredibly important new technology.

Nikon is expecting to lose $92 MILLION in 2020 on its camera business. That's bad, but it gets worse - Nikon is planning to reduce R&D, so we can expect the rate of their technical advances to decrease. Nikon is also predicting that their market share will decrease, and the total market size is decreasing, so their revenue will inevitably drop.
We believe Nikon can pull through this, but their current plans might not be the right plans. We believe they should cater to existing DSLR customers rather than trying to push everyone to their mirrorless Z system. We believe the Z system is an area for long-term growth, but producing F-mount products will help raise cash to keep the business running in the short term. Finally, we believe Nikon should INVEST and take an even bigger loss for a couple of years, allowing them to grow their market share instead of cutting it.

In the 2000s and early 2010s, Sony’s cameras were TERRIBLE. They were SO FAR behind Canon and Nikon that it seemed impossible for them to catch up... but, they did catch up around 2018, and in 2019 Sony solidly surpassed the Canon and Nikon mirrorless cameras. HOW DID THEY DO IT?! I researched it and the answers are fascinating and directly relatable to your personal life and business.
