It is a label that only really matters to other photographers.

As to the equipment, have a look at Bert Hardy's Box Brownie photographs. Equipment doesn't make you a good photographer.

    Pro or not pro.
    When is a musician pro?
Making records, doing gigs, doing studio work, teaching?
You can do that and have another job.
IMHO, You are a pro if it is your primary profesion.
    You can do other stuff.
    Money or gear doesnĖ‹t matter.
You do not even have to make good pictures.

An amateur photographer can make better pictures and have better or more gear. But it is not his primary profession.
